More about Tom Distad

Biography

I grew up in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. I really enjoyed the proximity of Highland Park to the rest of the Twin Cities. As a kid I remember running and biking with my Dad around the Mississippi river between the Ford and Marshall bridges. Our path took us along the St. Paul and Minneapolis sides of the river. I attended Highland Catholic and Cretin Derham Hall. My mother is an alumni of both schools. As a kid I played baseball at the Highland Little League Fields and participated in basketball and soccer through Hillcrest Recreation(Rec) Center. My participation in sports through Hillcrest Rec Center took me to many different Rec Centers throughout St. Paul. This was the first glimpse of the size, diversity and geography of the city. During high school I began working at Hillcrest on nights and weekends. I also did the lawn care for my parent's investment properties in addition to my grandma's house. These obligations took me all over the city and this is where I began to truly appreciate everything the Twin Cities has to offer.

After high school I would go on to attend The University of Iowa. I majored in Film and minored in Native American studies. Running and movies are are my two hobbies. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Iowa City, but was ready to move home and begin working my dad. My dad and I have been partners since 2006 and Mike (my brother) joined the team in 2013. I have lived in Minneapolis for eight years and consistently run around Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet and Lake of the Isles. If you see me out running I will typically be accompanied by my Irish setter Bud. I ran cross country in high school and since then have gone on to do marathons. I have completed the Chicago, Boston and Twin Cities marathons. The Twin Cities provides 100s of miles of trails, the four major sports teams, a major university, and plenty of theaters, restaurants and bars. I have and continue to enjoy my time in the Twin Cities.
